Playa Del Carmen

When it comes to holidays, birthdays, anniversaries or pretty much anytime you are expected to give gifts, I always choose an experience. Stuff comes and goes, but experiences can last a lifetime. Wow, that sounds really corny, maybe I should write greeting cards!

When I turned 40 I knew exactly what I wanted…sunshine, warm water, and time away. Since I hadn’t been to the Caribbean side of Mexico we looked at a lot of areas, but chose Playa Del Carmen. I have had a bunch of girlfriends visit and love it, so we went for it.

After checking out several hotels and resorts, I chose the Mahekal Beach Resort. This place is awesome and I can’t wait to go back. Nestled right on the beach with palapa style bungalows, palm trees, a few gorgeous pools, and amazing restaurants, there wasn't much NOT to love! The spa was a dream and the property was small enough to feel special, but spread out enough to have privacy. So basically it was perfect. After we got back my mom even booked a trip down there!

Just looking at all of these images makes me want to high tail it back down, but with Waylon this time. There are a ton of things to do with kids - when he’s a bit older.

One afternoon we drive for lunch in Tulum, which is very cute, but a bit trendy for my taste. I thought we were going to run over a tourist taking selfies as they rode their bike down a narrow and pretty much one way road! There is also nowhere to really park if you are just going for the day. It’s such a secluded stretch of beach, the parking is reserved for hotel guests, and there are a LOT of really cool hotels. After driving around to check it all out, we ended up at La Zebra, a gorgeous beachfront hotel, for lunch.

Exploring Playa Del Carmen was really fun. I am a sucker for street vendors so naturally I was in heaven. We picked up some beach blankets, a hat or two, and some other fun novelties. My favorite restaurant across from the hotel was a Greek restaurant called Milo’s - of course. We ate there a few times and each time it was so tasty.
